Built into macOS, Disk Utility allows you to view details on your hard drive, add. It then hung at "Unmounting Disk" for about an hour before I gave up completely. Then I created a full 60GB ext3 partition on there, hoping the OSX installer could deal with that. I booted an Ubuntu Live disk and partitioned the drive to remove the Windows System Information partition, and installed GUID Partition table. After bringing up Disk Utility, and clicking Partition, the installer locked up for 20 minutes before I gave up.

BIOS settings for AHCI, suspend mode to S3, and DVD is first boot device, hard drive second. The sidebar in Disk Utility should now show each available disk or other storage device, beginning with your startup disk. DVD is on first SATA port, SSD is on the 2nd. Choose View > Show All Devices (if available) from the menu bar or toolbar in Disk Utility. Removed a stick of ram to get down to 4GB, unplugged all extra drives and USB. I have set followed Tony's guide to a tee. You will find the window populating with messages about the drives health, messages that indicate things are fine. Instead, right-click the file WD Drive Utilities Installer application and select the Show Package Contents. Otherwise, you can skip this step and do it from the Utilities page during the macOS or OS X installation. If your Mac doesn’t work, you can do this using a second Mac and an external hard drive caddy. It’s easy to reformat your hard drive using Disk Utility in macOS or OS X.

Click on Verify Disk in the lower right corner and let it run. Double-click the WDUtilitiesInstallerforMac211100.dmg to create the WD Drive Utilities disk image on your desktop.
